Brent's World Forums vs Outlook Web App

Post by Cube Inc »

Here's a bit of an odd one, I tried to log into this forum from Google Chrome running on a Windows 10 VM, but when I went to "www.catracing.org" it brought me to an Outlook Web App login screen.

Additionally, when I tried entering the forum URL directly, (www.catracing.org/hendrb/forum) it gave me a 404 - not found.

Yet in Firefox under Linux - here I am and here I post.

It took me a few moments to realize that in order to connect to this forum, and your web site, one must enter http://www.catracing.org - the HTTPS protocol actually takes you to a different server or root folder, and Brent's web site and forum are not there.

Just thought I'd share that in case anyone else has encountered the same. Most browsers nowadays default to https if you just type in a URL.

Yeah. Just the way that I have the routing (Port forwarding setup...).. https is forwarded to the email server.

One of these days I need to make it a long term project to get reverse HTTP proxy working, and my SSL cert working on the web box..
http://catracing.org/hendrb/forum/ should work too.

You can also go to my blog. www.catracing.org and click on the forums tab.

Now that they are actually being used a little bit, it is something I might look back into.

Several years ago I set up nginx for that purpose and I have to say - it is awesome. Directing and in some cases serving http, https and websocket connections - all handled effortlessly for dozens of domains (I have no doubt it could handle much more!) - it really is a Swiss Army Knife.

I like the fact that it can do all the https / ssl stuff itself, and then you can connect internally to destination web servers over http. For 99% of the stuff I host, there is no need for https, yet everything is pushing that direction these days. I set up my own CA years ago which has just expired (so I guess slightly over 10 years ago) and made self-signed certificates for all the domains I was hosting, but it is such a pain to maintain when I don't actually need it to be secure. They are public web sites after all, and most of them don't even have anything to log into... sigh.

It did throw me for a loop the first time I hit your mail login page though... haha.

True, but one of the main purposes that I have my servers setup the way they are, is for me to gain practical experience for my career. So I do want to do things right.

It is just a real pain in the ass, especially the Microsoft product side of everything.

I just got frustrated the first time, when things just did not work, and the forums were getting zero participation, so it went by the wayside, and I decided to focus on the BBS, and the blog which were active.

Now things are picking up here, so time to revisit.
