Fun With OS X Terminal

Post by hendrb01 »

So I have been playing around with the terminal in OS X 10.12. Which might surprise some people since I have been using Windows machines for awhile now. To be fair, I really Like OS X. It's simply comes down to the fact that Apple has done some things in recent years that makes buying NEW hardware from them unpalatable. To reiterate.

1) Discontinuing of Aperture.
2) Making the Mac PRO Desktop unpalatable for professional use, and not what I am looking for in a desktop.
3) Removing all ports on the new MacBook pro and replacing them with a USB-C.
4) Seemly arbitrary EOL for perfectly capable hardware with the latest OS release (Sierra)

There re some recent interface changes with OS X that I really dislike, but I'll save that for another post.

I have been having allot of fun having such easy access to a BASH shell. I know most users never venture into the shell (And for the vast majority of you, there is no need). I was previously aware of the power at my fingertips and how customizable it is. However until recently I just never took the opportunity to really explore it! I have now fallen in love with the home-brew repository, and have installed the following to make the terminal behave more like Linux.

1) Colorizing and list alias's (See Brent's World Article: http://www.catracing.org/hendrb/os-x-ma ... ike-linux/
2) Installed home brew and BAASH version 4 and the Home-brew Repository (See Brent's World Article: http://www.catracing.org/hendrb/tech-tu ... -brewos-x/
3) Installed htop from home-brew.
4) Installed nano 2.7 from home-brew.

I am enjoying using OS X again. I am contemplating replacing the battery, and upgrading the RAM in my 2010 MacBook Pro 15in. Now if Apple could just get their head out of their arses, and once again start releasing computers I actually want to purchase again, I might return full time to the Apple ecosystem.
