Holga Photowalk – Christmas In August Camera Store.
We are quickly coming to the last blogs of 2019. Though not really out of blog ideas, I have found myself a bit in a photographic slump! The last time this happened, I attached my trusty Holga lens and went out on the town. If you read my last blog, the review of the Korean film Christmas In August, you will know that I got found the references to late 1980s technology refreshing. Though at the time of its release. 1998, the products that were displayed with maybe the exception of a Super8 projector were all still in mainstream use and the intention of the director was not to use the promps as a technological retrospective. It would be interesting to think what the main protagonist Jun-Won would think about today’s DSLR and Mirrorless cameras if he was still alive and operating his photo studio. If you missed the review of Christmas in August, you can read it by clicking HERE.
Why am I reflecting on a previous blog? Christmas In August was set and filmed in Gunsan, and I was surprised to find out the “camera store” that was the films main set is still standing and opened as a tourist attraction! What better place to go and stretch my creative muscles!
The Chowan Photo studio is located near the Jinpo Maritime Museum, so there are several large parking areas nearby, the closest one is located across the street from the Yiseongdang Bakery (Another location you must stop at!). The museum features exhibits of vintage 1970s, and 1980s photography gear, and movie props. Like Jung-won’s scooter, and Da-Rim’s traffic enforcement car. Photo spots include the couch in the store were Jong-Won and Da-rim had many of their conversations, and the portrait backdrop where Jong-won performed his photographic art, and took his final funeral picture.
If you are looking for an offbeat place to kill some time, or are interested in older photography equipment, Chorwons photo studio is a must stop. A word of caution if you are looking for the attraction on your GPS, there are several actual functioning Chorwon Photo Studios that will pop up, I found myself directed to a business all the way on the other side of town!
I hope you enjoyed this weeks mini blog! If you wish to be notified when new content has been posted to Brent’s World, please register by clicking HERE.
How to get there.
While you can park in from of the exhibit, I would recommend parking in the free log across from the lseongdang bakery.
